If it’s your turn to host the annual Memorial Day barbecue, you’re probably feeling a combination of excitement and apprehension. Hosting can be a fun and rewarding experience, but by the same token, it can be nerve-racking if you’ve never done it before. Following are strategies designed to help residents of our apartments in Garland, Texas throw a memorable Memorial Day barbecue bash at our grilling & picnic area.
Plan a Basic Menu
Hosting your first barbecue isn’t the time to plan for fussy foods or experiment with unfamiliar culinary territory. Stick with traditional favorites such as hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and ribs — they’re easy to grill and hard to get wrong. Either do the grilling yourself or designate it to a trusted friend or relative. A free-for-all grill is a recipe for burns and other mishaps, especially if active children are a part of the picture.
Make it a Potluck
Asking everyone to bring a dish helps take the burden off the host and allows you to concentrate on other aspects of throwing a great party. To keep from ending up with an abundance of desserts and very few side dishes, ask those whose last names start with the letters A through N to bring a side dish and those whose names start with the letters O through Z to provide a dessert.
Make it Pet-Free
As a resident of a pet-friendly community, you may wish to include your furry friend or those of your guests in the festivities, but it’s wise to make the event pet-free for the safety and well-being of the animals. Certain standard barbecue foods, such as onions, can be toxic to dogs. Children at the barbecue may be tempted to feed pets items such as chocolate cake, which could result in a trip to the emergency vet’s office. Pets may also inadvertently get loose as a result of people coming and going, and you may not notice they are gone right away. Ask your guests to leave their pets safely at home, and provide yours with a quiet, peaceful room in your apartment for the duration of the festivities.
