How to Host a Memorable Memorial Day Barbecue

Parkside at Firewheel GrillIf it’s your turn to host the annual Memorial Day barbecue, you’re probably feeling a combination of excitement and apprehension. Hosting can be a fun and rewarding experience, but by the same token, it can be nerve-racking if you’ve never done it before. Following are strategies designed to help residents of our apartments in Garland, Texas throw a memorable Memorial Day barbecue bash at our grilling & picnic area.

Plan a Basic Menu

Hosting your first barbecue isn’t the time to plan for fussy foods or experiment with unfamiliar culinary territory. Stick with traditional favorites such as hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and ribs — they’re easy to grill and hard to get wrong. Either do the grilling yourself or designate it to a trusted friend or relative. A free-for-all grill is a recipe for burns and other mishaps, especially if active children are a part of the picture.

Make it a Potluck

Asking everyone to bring a dish helps take the burden off the host and allows you to concentrate on other aspects of throwing a great party. To keep from ending up with an abundance of desserts and very few side dishes, ask those whose last names start with the letters A through N to bring a side dish and those whose names start with the letters O through Z to provide a dessert.

Make it Pet-Free

As a resident of a pet-friendly community, you may wish to include your furry friend or those of your guests in the festivities, but it’s wise to make the event pet-free for the safety and well-being of the animals. Certain standard barbecue foods, such as onions, can be toxic to dogs. Children at the barbecue may be tempted to feed pets items such as chocolate cake, which could result in a trip to the emergency vet’s office. Pets may also inadvertently get loose as a result of people coming and going, and you may not notice they are gone right away. Ask your guests to leave their pets safely at home, and provide yours with a quiet, peaceful room in your apartment for the duration of the festivities.

Different Food Dips

3 Dips to Make for Your Next Get-Together

Different Food DipsWhether you’re celebrating a special event or inviting friends and family over for a housewarming party at your new Garland apartment, Instagram-worthy snacks are a must. From the sweet to the savory, dips help you nail that #BestHost or #BestHostess hashtag without breaking a sweat, so break out the bowls and try these easy ideas to really wow your guests:

In-a-Snap Chili Dip

Fantastic as a hearty appetizer when dinner’s going to take awhile, your guests will devour this startling easy savory dip.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Spread softened cream cheese on the bottom of a glass pie baker or 9×9″ square baking pan in an even layer. Top with one can of your favorite chili—Hormel brand works very well. Sprinkle 8 oz. of shredded cheese, such as sharp cheddar or “taco blend,” over the top of the chili. Bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden. Serve with tortilla chips and be prepared to give out the recipe, because you will get a lot of compliments.

Ranch Twist Spinach Dip

While calling it “healthy” may be a stretch, hey – at least it’s got veggies in it, right? Plus you don’t need the oven for this one, making it ideal for summer soirées.

Thaw a 10 oz. package of spinach and incorporate a packet of powdered ranch dip, an 8 oz. can of chopped water chestnuts, and a 16 oz. container of sour cream. Mix well by folding with a silicone spatula, or break out the hand mixer on low speed to save some time. Keep chilled in the freezer until you’re ready to serve, and pair this tasty dip with crisp veggies like carrots and celery for a real crowd-pleasing plate.

Red Velvet Dessert Dip

This dip is so good, you might have trouble sharing it with your guests! Better make two batches to be on the safe side.

In a large bowl, combine 4 ounces each of softened butter and softened cream cheese, 1/4 powdered sugar, 3/4 cup powdered red velvet cake mix and 2 tablespoons of milk. With a hand blender or a whisk, stir briskly until smoothly combined and uniform in appearance. Serve with fresh fruit, such as apple slices, on toothpicks or skewers. Be sure to keep plenty of napkins nearby, too—this dip is delicious, crave-worthy, and unapologetically gooey.

Need a place to entertain and a beautiful kitchen to polish your dip-making skills on demand? The Parkside at Firewheel Apartments in Garland has all that and more! We’re here to help you throw delightful get-togethers that your friends and family will love. Flowers in a Vase

How to Decorate Your Apartment for Spring

Flowers in a VaseThe weather is warming up and the first tulips and daffodils are sleepily coming to bloom. Spring has sprung! The decorations that kept your Garland, Texas apartment cozy through the winter might look and feel a little heavy now, so it’s a great time to mix things up a little with a bright palette and a few fresh ideas.

Bring On Spring

  • Stop by nearby Tuesday Morning at 3046 Lavon Drive and pick up a fun glass vase or jar that fits on your coffee table. Fill it with a colorful handful of dried or silk flowers to brighten your style.
  • Green is a color that’s full of energy and life, so take a hint from the trees and flowers and add a few playful faux moss-covered stones to your mantle or shelves to bring the outdoors in.
  • Feathers add an airy touch, but don’t limit yourself to peacock plumes; white and baby blue-dyed selections are an interesting inclusion when tucked into cork-topped glass jars. Both feathers and jars are available at the Michaels craft store on 5325 North Garland Avenue.
  • While reupholstering your couch every season could get a little expensive, a throw is a visually striking and inexpensive way to renovate your existing furniture—no nails required! Experiment with different colors and textures to introduce pastels into your room without a yearlong commitment.
  • Have wall art? Buy a “shabby chic” white frame or two and slide a few brightly-colored or spring print scrapbook papers (also available at Michaels) inside in lieu of photos or paintings. Voila! Instant seasonal art that can easily transition into summer photos with a quick swap.
  • Dark or heavily-patterned rugs can really clash with the beautiful sunshine and bright blue skies outside. Consider adding a small accent rug or throw rug to help define your living room or bedroom area with a dash of bright hues. Match color families with beautiful throw pillows nearby.

Spring is a time of renewal, so why not start with your Garland apartment? With a little savvy shopping and a few exciting decor pieces, you’ll feel like every day is full of new and beautiful possibilities. To learn more about our community or available floor plans, contact us today!

New Hobbies to Try This Year

Computer and CoffeeNow that winter is over, it is time to start thinking of new ways to spice up your life this year. If you are interested in trying something new, then you have come to the right place. These are some good hobbies you should consider trying this year and you don’t even have to spend a lot of money to do them.

New Hobbies to Try This Year

  • Running. If you are looking for a great way to get in shape and also get outside and enjoy the area, running is the hobby for you. You can try going to a few trails around the area. Even if you cannot run long now, you can start by walking and work your way up. You may even feel confident enough in some time to take part in a 5k.
  • Cooking. Everyone loves food and if you want to start mastering the art in the kitchen, now is a great time to start. You can try getting a cookbook and simply trying recipes that look good to you or you can take a cooking class around town with some friends.
  • Learning a new language. You never know when it can come in handy and if you took a language in high school or college, you can start with that one. Relearn what you had before and then go further. You may even want to treat yourself to a trip to a country that speaks the language once you feel comfortable enough with it.
  • Couponing. Whether you are tight on money or just want to save some of your hard-earned cash, couponing is a great way to do that. However, it does take some time so you will need to learn how to do it and then put it into practice.
  • Starting a blog. If you have something to say, you can start a blog. It doesn’t even have to be for anyone else but it can be a good way to get some things off your chest and feel better.

Whatever you have in store this year, make sure you have fun doing it. If you try one of these ideas and it isn’t for you, try something new instead! If you are looking for apartments in Garland, be sure to stop by our office to see what we have available.

Highway Road

3 Spring Break Road Trip Ideas

Highway RoadWith spring break right around the corner, it is time to figure out what you are going to do with all that free time. Considering that you will probably have around a week off, a road trip might be the perfect way to get out of the house and take advantage of the warmer weather. There are a lot of road trip destinations in Texas and the surrounding states–so you will have no shortage of options out there on the open road!

Time For A Road Trip – 3 Destinations For Spring Break

1. South Padre Island

Depending on your age, South Padre Island might sound like the perfect place to spend spring break. It is the preferred destination for college students throughout Texas and beyond, offering sun, sand and non-stop parties. It is about a nine-hour drive from Garland, so you could make it in a day if you wanted. Or, you could stop over in Austin or San Antonio to break up your trip.

2. New Orleans

New Orleans is another popular spring break destination that can be reached from Garland in less than eight hours. There is plenty of culture, great food and exciting nightlife in New Orleans to occupy you for a week. You could also spend part of your break in Shreveport which is on the way to New Orleans and enjoy the gambling boats on the river.

3. Carlsbad Caverns

If you are more interested in natural beauty than beaches or Cajun food, then the Carlsbad Caverns in neighboring New Mexico is the ideal road trip destination for your spring break. Also around an eight-hour drive from Garland, the caverns are spectacular natural formations that are guaranteed to fill you with awe. The largest chamber of the cave system, known as The Big Room, is nearly 4,000 feet long and over 250 feet high.

Floor Cleaning Equipment

Here Are the 4 Best Cleaning Products Just in Time for Spring Cleaning

Floor Cleaning EquipmentEvery year, many Garland residents look forward to spring. The flowers, warm weather and green landscape make it easy to love this time of year. Nevertheless, in addition to being a season of outdoor beauty, spring is the perfect time for cleaning indoors. Here are four cleaning products that are bound to make your spring cleaning tasks a bit easier:

Foaming Glass Cleaner

Most people immediately reach for plastic bottles filled with blue liquid whenever it’s time to clean glass. However, there is another option—foaming glass cleaner.

Because the cleaner is not a runny liquid, it’s able to stick to the grimiest areas of your glass for easier cleaning. In addition, since the foam doesn’t drip, unintentional droplets of cleaner won’t add to your spring cleaning chores. A quick spray and a few swipes with a lint-free cloth will leave your mirrors and glass furnishings spotless.

All-Purpose Bleach Cleaner

Nothing seems to disinfect quite like bleach. However, the smell of this popular cleaning staple may not be your favorite fragrance. To enjoy the disinfecting and cleaning power of bleach coupled with a fresh scent, consider an all-purpose bleach-containing cleaner. These cleaning solutions come in handy spray bottles for easy application, and they annihilate germs, mold and mildew on contact. In addition, if you are watching your budget and don’t want to buy a name brand cleaner, tons of generic or store brand bleach-based cleaners are available.

Antibacterial Rubber Gloves

You are bound to get your hands dirty as you spring clean, so it’s best to wear gloves. Look for rubber gloves that have a bumpy surface on the fingers to help you grip even the most slippery surfaces and a soft lining for comfort. Also, opt for gloves that are antibacterial, since you won’t want them to become a breeding ground for germs between uses. More than likely, your spring cleaning mission does not include spreading germs all over your living space.

The Magic Eraser

For a great multifunctional cleaning product that doesn’t scuff or scratch sensitive surfaces, the Magic Eraser works great. The product can remove a wide variety of stains, including scuffs and ink marks, without damaging paint or scratching soft countertops. In addition, the eraser only requires water to activate it.

Although you may already have your to-do list in mind, spring is not just for cleaning. It is also a time for new beginnings. Why not start the season in a beautiful new apartment? Contact our office today for a tour of our Parkside at Firewheel apartments in Garland, TX.

Mount Rushmore

4 Things to Know About President’s Day

Mount RushmorePresident’s Day is coming up on February 20th. This national holiday, which has been around in some form since the late 1800s, serves as a day for us to honor past and present U.S. presidents. How much do you know about this annual holiday? Test your knowledge of Presidents’ Day with the following facts.

It’s Officially Known as Washington’s Birthday

Although everyone you know probably calls it “President’s Day,” the federal government officially acknowledges it as Washington’s Birthday. Some state governments officially call it President’s Day, while others still use Washington’s Birthday. President’s Day was established in order to give equal recognition to Washington and Lincoln rather than celebrating their birthdays separately. Some states do celebrate Lincoln’s birthday as its own holiday, though.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act Established the Date

Under this act, the third Monday in February is designated as Presidents’ Day. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which wasn’t around until 1968, also designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day and the fourth Monday in October as Veterans Day.

Four Presidents Have February Birthdays

Washington and Lincoln weren’t the only presidents to celebrate a birthday in February. Ronald Reagan and William Harrison were also born in February. Reagan was born on February 6, Harrison on February 9, Lincoln on February 12 and Washington on February 22. While President’s Day is a day to honor all presidents, many parts of the country focus mainly on honoring Washington or Lincoln.

President’s Day or Presidents’ Day?

Both terms have been used for this holiday, and there has been debate over which one is correct. Those who mainly celebrate Washington’s birthday or Lincoln’s birthday on this holiday are correct referring to it as the singular President’s Day, while those who honor several or all of our presidents are correct in spelling it as the plural Presidents’ Day.

Although President’s Day is about honoring presidents, it’s also known as a big shopping day. If you’re off on President’s Day, our community is in walking distance to Firewheel Town Center for shopping, dining and entertainment.
