Knitting With Yarn

How to DIY a Cozy Knitted Blanket

Knitting With YarnWith winter right around the corner, everyone is preparing their warm clothes and getting ready to hunker down for the short days and chilly temperatures. Fortunately, as long as you are prepared, winter can be a wonderful season for settling in and getting cozy—especially when you have a favorite blanket to curl up under. And what better blanket than the one you made yourself?

Tips for Making Your Own DIY Knitted Blanket

1. You Don’t Have to Know How to Knit to Make a Blanket

Your first thought might be, “I don’t know how to knit!”, but don’t worry. You can use the basics of knitting, learned from the video of your choice, to knit without having any knitting experience at all. Of course, if you do know how to knit, that just makes things easier!

Don’t be afraid to try your hand at knitting—it is not complicated and can be learned by just about anyone.

2. Use PVC Pipes to Knit a Chunky Blanket

Chunky yarn blankets are all the rage right now, which is a good thing if you are new to knitting. The large size of the yarn makes it much simpler to knit together than smaller, finer yarn.

One popular method of knitting thick yarn into a chunky blanket uses PVC pipes to substitute for knitting needles. Laura Birek shows you how to knit together a blanket in a surprisingly short amount of time using PVC. Try it out for yourself!

3. Use Your Arms to Make Your Own Blanket

Maybe you don’t want to use PVC pipes. Maybe you don’t even know what a PVC pipe is. Whatever your reasons, rest easy. You have other options—namely, your arms. Yes! You can knit a blanket with just your arms, used like you would use knitting needles.

SimplyMaggie shows you how to knit a chunky yarn blanket using your arms. Apparently, you can finish a blanket in 45 minutes if you get it down quickly. Even if it takes you longer, in one evening you can make your own blanket.

The following are three breakfast recipes that will soon become your favorites to make in our apartments in Garland.

Heat and Eat Breakfast Sandwiches

All it takes are some English muffins, eggs, sliced ham and cheese to make tasty breakfast sandwiches at home. Follow these easy instructions to make these tasty heat and eat breakfast sandwiches:

  • Build a breakfast sandwich with your choice of egg, meat and cheese

Each morning grab a sandwich out of the freezer, wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for one to two minutes. When the microwave buzzes, you have a tasty breakfast that took minutes to make.

Pumpkin on Wood

Fall Accents to Add Into Your Decor

Pumpkin on WoodJust adding a few decorative items around your apartment can give it a warm, cozy feeling that is perfect for fall. The following are some easy, yet extremely creative, ways residents of our apartments in Garland can incorporate various fall accents into their home’s decor.

Swap the Glass Vase for a Real Pumpkin

Instead of storing flowers, real or artificial, in glass vases, consider using real pumpkins. Real pumpkins can be turned into vases. All you have to do is completely clean out the inside of the pumpkin then place the flowers inside.

If the orange color of the pumpkin doesn’t go with your decor, you can use a white pumpkin. White pumpkins go with almost anything or they can be painted to match your surrounding decor.

Toss a Throw Over the Back of Your Sofa

People often associate warm, cozy throw blankets with the fall season. Neatly folding up a throw blanket and draping it over the back of your sofa is a great fall accent. Not only does it give your apartment a fall feeling, but the blanket can come in handy on those chillier days.

Protect Your Tabletop With Rustic Tree Branch Coasters

Coasters are not only practical, but they are an extremely easy way to bring a fall vibe to your home’s decor. Instead of using your traditional cardboard coasters to protect the tabletop, consider using tree branch coasters.

Tree branch coasters have a very woodsy feel to them that make them perfect for use when you are hosting autumn gatherings with friends. You can make tree branch coasters on your own if you are crafty, or you can usually purchase them in home decor shops.

Find the Perfect Autumn Wreath

Hanging an autumn wreath in your home is a simple, quick way to bring the fall season indoors. Finding the perfect autumn wreath doesn’t have to be difficult. Local craft vendors often have numerous autumn wreaths that are available for sale or you could be adventurous and make your own.

Parkside at Firewheel has spacious apartments that are just waiting to be decorated for the fall season. Call our office today to schedule an appointment to tour our apartments in Garland.

Camping Tent

Garland’s Gone Camping

Camping TentThe fall is one of the best times of the year to go camping in Texas. But if you are like many people, it can be hard to find the time to go camping when you are busy with so many other things. Fortunately, the city of Garland’s Parks and Recreation Department has an event that makes going camping just a little easier – Garland’s Gone Camping. All you need to do is register and you can join your friends and neighbors for a camping event in Audubon Park!

A Camping Event Made for You

All you need to participate in the Garland’s Gone Camping event is a tent and a sleeping bag. Everything else is taken care of. Event coordinators have set up games, a campfire, a night hike, s’mores and entertainment. They are also taking care of dinner and breakfast. So you can get out of the house and into nature while enjoying yourself with minimal effort on your part. And, you get a chance to hang out with other area residents who like to camp.

The event happens at Audubon Park, beginning at 3 p.m. on October 7 and ending at 8 a.m. on the morning of October 8. You can register online at PlayGarland.com.

What Should You Bring?

You will want to bring a tent that will accommodate you, and your group if you are bringing family or friends. You will also want a sleeping bag to stay warm at night. The sleeping bag does not need to be rated for super low temperatures, as Garland does not get too cold in early October. Just check the temperature forecast before you head out to make sure you have warm enough gear.

Extras that might make your camping trip a little more comfortable include:

  • Sleeping pad or cot – the ground is hard, so it is nice to have something soft to sleep on
  • Flashlight/headlamp/lantern – a light source is always useful when camping
  • Appropriate clothing – camping is always a little dirty, so it is a good idea to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

Autumn Wreath

4 DIYs That Will Cozy Up Your Apartment for Fall

Autumn WreathSwitching up your décor for fall is a fantastic way to embrace the festivity of the season. One of the easiest ways residents of our Garland apartments can cozy up their apartments for fall is by inviting spectacular autumn inspired colors into their homes. Here are four DIY projects to get you started.

Fall Flower Vases

Recycle glass Frappuccino or milk bottles into stunning vases to hold fall flowers. Simply spray paint the entire bottle with one or more fall inspired colors or opt for a candy corn affect with layers of orange, yellow and white. Fill your vases with brightly colored sunflowers, mums or other fall flowers for a festive centerpiece.

Mason Jar Candle Holders

Nothing cozies up an apartment like candles. Embrace the fall season with an appropriate motif. Place a large leaf or acorn stencil on the front of a mason jar, then spray paint the rest of it with a fall color like fiery red, burnt orange, mustard yellow or golden brown. Peel off the stencil when dry. Set a candle with a scent reminiscent of autumn inside, which provides a warm glow through the unpainted area. Make several in varying colors to scatter around your home.

Fall Wreath

Welcome visitors to your home by cozying up your front door with a wreath that promotes the season with actual fall foliage. Use a metal or foam wreath frame and attach items with floral wire. Intersperse fallen leaves, pine cones, flowers, mini pumpkins and other fall greenery for a stunning, festive effect.

Pumpkin Tablescape

Nothing gives your home a cozy fall feel like a big, orange pumpkin. Create a fall tablescape using a pumpkin as the centerpiece, then surround it with other autumn-inspired items like leaves, pine cones and acorns. Alternately, cut out the center of the pumpkin, like you would for carving, and turn it into a vase for holding fall flowers. Keep in mind that carved pumpkins deteriorate quickly, so you’ll have to replace your tablescape about every week to 10 days.

Dog in Pet Bed

4 Easy DIY Projects for Your Four-Legged Friend

Dog in Pet BedIf you enjoy making arts and crafts, consider creating something for your furry friend. There are several DIY projects that you can do for your dog or cat for practical or decorative purposes, including fashion accessories and pet beds. Consider making one or more of the following projects for your cat or dog.

Pet Bed

If you know how to sew, you can make a comfortable bed for your pet. Use a pattern that’s the right size for your dog or cat, then cut the pattern in two. Zig zag these pieces, then follow the sewing pattern to create each section of the bed. You’ll have a base pattern and a top pattern to follow, and you can use foam or batting to fill in your pet’s bed. You can add decorative touches to your pet’s bed, such as ribbons to dress it up a bit, but skip these decorations if your pet is likely to chew on them.

Cinnamon Bun Dog Biscuits

To make these tasty treats, combine flour, salt and baking powder in a bowl, then stir eggs, canola oil and water in a separate bowl. Add the flour mix to the egg mix, then stir to form dough. Separate the dough into strips, and roll them up jelly-style. Add honey, cinnamon and nuts, then bake for 15 minutes. Drizzle cream cheese on them.

Cat Bow Tie

For this cute project, you’ll need scissors, an iron and board, thread and needle, velcro, a pattern and a safety pin. Cut out your pattern pieces, then sew the main part of the bow together. Sew the other bow pieces, then attach them according to the instructions. Sew the bow onto your cat’s collar for an adorable look.

Handmade Catnip Mice

Print out a pattern for your mice, then choose fabric for them. Tie a knot in a piece of cord for the tail, then make the catnip core pouch. Follow the pattern instructions for making the mice using a needle and thread. Fill the pouch with catnip, attach the tail and you’ll have handmade toys for your cat.

Our pet-friendly community welcomes dogs and cats. Please contact us for more information on our available apartments in Garland, Texas.
